In August 2010 the Global Yoga Foundation will be traveling to Uganda to teach at the Kampala IDP refugee camp.
Some 15,000 refugees – escapees from wars in the Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia – live in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, without UNHCR assistance. Rejecting residence in rural camps, they have chosen an environment in which they can use their skills to achieve self-sufficiency and dignity.
For a valuable study on the Kampala IDP camp, see Michela Macchiavello's erudite and helpful analysis
of "Livelihoods strategies of urban refugees in Kampala" in UNHCR New Issues in Refugee Research Working Paper no 95. Important information on Internaly Displaced Persons camps can be found on the United Nations webpage http://un.org.
